Spring is here! The weather is warmer, the flowers are blooming, and everyone has a little more bounce in their step. Do you know what all of this means? That’s right…it’s officially PATIO SEASON!! All of the patios that were boarded up and left to die in the frozen tundra that is the Chicago Winter are now open to bask in the sun. Restaurant patios are the perfect place to share a drink with a friend, catch a tan, and eat some grub in the open air. We all know food tastes better when it’s eaten outside!
I heard that one of my favorite restaurants, Chop Shop, had opened their rooftop patio and I could not wait to try it out! I grabbed my friend Miya for some after work drinks and headed over. Once we arrived we were escorted up the stairs to the patio. Everything was so cute! Wooden furniture, multi-colored chairs, string lights…recipe for a perfect patio! We took our seats, ordered drinks (scotch for me), and dove into the new spring menu.
We started off with a few appetizers. Out of the many delicious sounding options, we narrowed our choices down to the grilled octopus, lamb tartare, and smoked mozzarella skewers. We were very pleased with these choices!
The smoked mozzarella came out first. The smoky flavor of the mozzarella was balanced out so well by the sweetness of the basil and the grilled tomato. Classic flavors with a twist!
The grilled octopus had a very lovely char-grill taste that mixed very well with the spiciness of the diavolo sauce. It’s hard to pick a favorite from the evening but this was definitely up there!
Our last appetizer was the lamb tartare. Now, I had never had lamb tartare before this so I had no idea what to expect. This was different from any tartare that I have ever had before, in the best way possible. The flavors were just so unique! I could eat that over and over and over again and never get sick of it!
After we ate every little crumb of our appetizers, we moved onto the main course. I asked the server to suggest something to me. I am not picky at all and this leads to me being very indecisive! She told me that they had a smoked steak and I didn’t even need her to continue. DONE! Easy decision. Smoked steak? Are you kidding? How could I not choose that? And it had grilled greens and pickled ramps on top? STOP. Just shovel it directly into my mouth.
Miya opted for the pork chop, which looked so delicious in its own right. I should’ve stolen a bite from her! She loved it, though, and I trust her opinion. I will be getting this beauty of a dish next time I go.
So if you’re looking for a perfect spot for a date night or just a night out with your friends, look no further. This patio will definitely be frequented by me this summer. Hope to see you there!
